This lecture will embrace both the sociology and Buddhist perspectives. Within U.S. society, the elderly are generally seen in a more negative light compared to other nations and cultures—especially Asian countries.  How these unflattering stereotypes of seniors affect the aged will be explored. Research explaining how such dismissive images can be overcome will also be reviewed. We will also explore how the Buddha’s teachings help us cope with physical changes and self-empowerment with Buddhist insights.
